The Gothic fortress of the City Methodist Church in downtown Gary will mark its 100th anniversary next year.
Built in 1926, the towering nine-story church has now been vacant as long as it was occupied. Its dramatic ruins are often photographed and can be seen widely on Instagram and at art fairs across Chicagoland and the Midwest, including a recent exhibit at the Lake Geneva Public Library in Wisconsin.
The Art Table, a Northwest Indiana arts collective, invites the public to recall the City Methodist Church's long-gone heyday at a gathering Monday. It will host an event in its The City Remembers series outside the City Methodist Church at 577 Washington St. from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday.
