The Conjuring: Last Rites brings the cinematic exploits of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren to a close with a melodramatic whimper. The seventh film, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, and 10th overall in The Conjuring Universe, comes up woefully short on scares. A long runtime meant to give the characters thoughtful closure has significant pacing issues. Instead, the narrative slows to a crawl as events broadcast in the beginning take over two hours to come to fruition. Director Michael Chaves, who directed the prequel, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and The Nun II, gets style points for effort, but the film is honestly a chore to sit through.
