SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — A group of Santa Cruz County residents has formed a campaign called Get the Flock Out to protest license plate reading cameras in Santa Cruz, Capitola and Watsonville.

The cameras are owned by the Flock Safety company and automatically read the license plates of any cars that pass by them. The Get the Flock Out campaign is concerned that this data is at high risk of being misused, calling the cameras “mass surveillance technology” and “a violation of our Fourth Amendment rights” in a press release. The group is especially concerned that data will be shared with federal immigration agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security.

The group is asking the cities of Santa Cruz, Capitola and Watsonville to pause their contracts
