US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to rename the Department of Defense the Department of War, a title it previously held until the end of World War II.

The move is the latest in Mr Trump's efforts to rebrand the US military, including by presiding over an extraordinary military parade in downtown Washington DC, and restoring the original names of military bases that were changed after racial justice protests in 2020.

Mr Trump has also challenged conventional norms around the domestic deployment of the US armed forces by creating military zones along the southern US border with Mexico to aid an immigration crackdown and also deploying troops in cities like Los Angeles and Washington.
