SILSBEE, Texas — A motorcyclist was killed Friday evening after leaving the roadway and hit a road sign on Highway 96, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened around 7:43 p.m. on Sept. 5 north of the Highway 96 bypass, DPS said in a news release. Preliminary investigation indicates the motorcycle was traveling south when it went off the road and into the center median, where it hit the sign.

The rider was pronounced dead at the scene. Their name has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

The invesigation is ongoing.
