It’s certainly one to build on for the Windsor Spitfires.

The last team in the Ontario Hockey League to open exhibition play looked to be a step behind on Friday.

The defending West Division-champion Spitfires opened the scoring, but the Flint Firebirds scored the next eight and cruised to an 8-1 win over Windsor at Iceland Arena in Flint, Mich.

Windsor, which won all five of its pre-season games a year ago, will now attempt to get its first exhibition win on Sunday when the club plays the Saginaw Spirit at the Memorial Arena in Chatham at 2:05 p.m.

Windsor left eight veteran players from last year’s roster out of the lineup on Friday while going with six players that were seeing their first action ever with the Spitfires.
