GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — The strong winds on Lake Michigan Thursday night, going into Friday, made for enormous waves that kite surfers like Tye Kowalski look forward to.

“I was like, maybe 50 yards from shore, and I could just feel the rip current pull me out, and I could barely get to shore with the kite in the air,” Kowalski said.

While these waves can be fun for experienced surfers, they can also mean danger.

Surfer Corey Swainston spent the afternoon surfing with his family and said that sometimes the waves can even get too rough for them.

“There are days where [my son] gets uncomfortable out there, and I'm like, then if you're not comfortable, then you shouldn't be out there, period,” Swainston said.
