KAUAI, Hawaii (Island News) -- A man was sentenced to over 29 years in prison on Thursday for multiple incidents on Kauai related to extortion and drug trafficking.

David Borges, a 43-year-old man from Koloa, was sentenced in federal court on Sept. 4, 2025 to 352 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release. The sentencing follows the defendant’s guilty pleas to extortion, conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, carrying a loaded gun during a drug trafficking crime and distributing a mixture of fentanyl and cocaine charges.

According to court records, Borges and codefendant Albert Bactad extorted and stole $2,500 cash, drugs, a firearm, and an automobile from two men on Kauai. These separate incidents took place on Dec. 26 and Dec. 27, 2021. The two men as
