A rain filled week one is in the books to mark the return of high school football in Kansas for 2025. While the conditions may not have been the best for some, it didn't keep teams from giving their best to start off the year right.

And what KAKE billed as the game of the week to start the year did not disappoint. Hays went to Derby and simply stunned the home crowd with a 22-21 victory over the number one preseason team in Class 6A. Trailing 21-14 late in the fourth, Hays drove the field and QB Zane Viegra hit Braxton Basgall with just five seconds to play to make it 21-20. Coach Tony Crough chose to go for the win--and it paid off.
