PECKVILLE — If Sam Cooke ever wondered what was the sound of the men working on the football chain gang, it would be hoarse screaming and booing – lots of booing.

Twice in a matter of minutes, the Wilkes-Barre Area-Valley View outcome was decided on the venerable, lost art of bringing out the chains. If football is a game of inches, then Friday night’s nailbiter had to be the game of the year.

On the second try, the on-field measurement came up a foot short, and Wilkes-Barre Area celebrated a 16-14 victory over Valley View in an early-season upset.

“When we kicked the field goal, I had a great feeling we were going to win the game,” Wilkes-Barre Area quarterback Jake Howe said. “I called it and said we were going to get that stop. It was a big pile. I am just glad they came up with it.
