COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced the name for a baby elephant that was recently born at the zoo.

The zoo named the elephant Rita Jean Wolfe in honor of a beloved member of the Wolfe family who passed away last year.

In 1926, the zoo says the Wolfe family encouraged the City of Columbus to develop its own zoo and contributed funds for the first-ever habitat.

Rita previously worked at WBNS-10TV and served on several community organizations and philanthropies in Columbus and Franklin County.

Rita served on the boards of The Harmony Project, the James Cancer Hospital, Columbus Humane, Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine Engagement Council and Leadership Columbus.
