LA CENTER — The La Center Wildcats pitched a shutout for three quarters before the Montesano Bulldogs roared back with 20 fourth-quarter points to win the season-opening non-league football game 20-19 on Friday.

Even after seeing their lead vanish, the Wildcats mounted a late charge that nearly won them the game.

La Center got the ball back with 3:35 to play in the game and mounted a valiant effort to get into field goal position with a number of key plays.

In 12 plays, the Wildcats reached the Montesano 22-yard line. However, a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty after an incomplete pass pushed the Wildcats back 15 yards with just 14 seconds remaining.
