Months after a shooting at a nearby hospital in York that left two dead, including a police officer, WellSpan has announced it is creating its own police force as part of $20 million in security upgrades.
Vice president of Public Safety William White will oversee a force comprised of armed officers and unarmed security officers, according to a Friday news release. WellSpan said the police department will monitor hospitals and facilities across its health system.
Wellspan’s hospital in York, located off Interstate 83 at Rathton Road, is about five miles away from UPMC Memorial in York, where a man in February barged into the intensive care unit with a gun. After the attack, many hospitals in central Pa. updated their security procedures.
