OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) -- Members of the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office are remembering a trailblazing deputy. A funeral service was held Friday for 91-year-old Betty Jo Hunter.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Lt. Betty Hunter was better known as "Mama Jo." She's described as a woman who broke barriers in the department as their first female investigator, sergeant and lieutenant. In her more than 30 years of service they say she was a champion for crime victims and an expert in crimes against women and children.

According to a Facebook post, "Mama Jo" Hunter "inspired generations of deputies, mentored countless women in law enforcement, and was deeply involved in her church, Kiwanis, and community organizations."
