Acting Gov. Sylvia Luke issued Friday an emergency proclamation declaring a state of emergency across Hawaii as Hurricane Kiko, now packing sustained winds near 140 mph with higher gusts, continues to intensify while moving closer to the Central Pacific basin.
As of 5 p.m. Friday, Kiko was located about 1,130 miles east-southeast of Hilo and 1,335 miles east-southeast of Honolulu, moving west-northwest at 12 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. While no coastal watches or warnings were in effect, forecasters said residents should closely monitor the storm, which could strengthen further overnight before gradually weakening Sunday.
