CEDAR LAKE — When Layla Nestor attended her first club soccer practice as a 9-year-old, her eyes were glued to the other goalkeepers practicing.
"My coach asked, 'Do you want to go over and try it?'" she recalled. "So I went and tried it, and I've been a goalie ever since."
Nearly eight years later, Nestor has become one of the best keepers in the Region. The three-year starter made history last week, breaking the program's career shutout record against Andrean.
The previous record was set by 2013 graduate Bernadette Sakelaris. Sakelaris recorded 21 shutouts over her four-year varsity career.
Nestor, a junior, currently has 23.
Sakelaris has volunteered with Hanover's girls soccer team on and off since graduating and knew Nestor would eventually surpass her record.
