The Cy-Hawk Series between Iowa and Iowa State is one of the most underrated rivalries in college football, as the two in-state foes almost always come down to the wire.

Iowa has a huge lead on the series, with a 47-24 record heading into 2025. And despite Iowa State becoming a consistent Big 12 championship contender under Matt Campbell, the Cyclones are still 3-7 against the Hawkeyes under the 10th-year coach.

Iowa State is looking for its second consecutive win in 2025, however, as the Cyclones defeated Iowa on a last-second field goal from Kyle Konrardy in 2024. Iowa State hosts Cy-Hawk in 2025, although it hasn't won at home in the series since 2011.

And if the history between both programs wasn't enough, they also are not only sponsored by Iowa Corn, but they also play for the Cy-Hawk Trophy, which features sculptures of both teams' mascots.

Here's a look at the Cy-Hawk Trophy, including everything else to know about the rivalry.

Cy-Hawk trophy

From 1977-2010, the Cy-Hawk Series played for a trophy that featured a running back in a stiff-arm pose, while also including looks at Iowa's Herky the Hawk and Iowa State's Cy the Cardinal.

The trophy was replaced for the 2011 season, although the rivalry used a temporary trophy in 2011 after the replacement trophy design was so negatively reviewed by fans, including former Iowa coach Hayden Fry. The replacement trophy originally depicted a family of corn farmers.

It's likely a good thing the series never used the original replacement trophy, as it didn't really make sense in context of a football game, especially with no references to either teams.

The current trophy was unveiled in 2012 after the rivalry game, which displays an in-depth look at both mascots with corn in the background. The base of the trophy also has the logos of both teams.

Cy-Hawk series record

Iowa leads the Cy-Hawk Series with a 47-24 record, as it has mostly dominated the series. Iowa State is looking for its second consecutive win in 2025, however.

Why is Iowa vs Iowa State called Cy-Hawk?

Cy-Hawk is a combination of both teams' nicknames, as Iowa State is the Cyclones and Iowa is the Hawkeyes.
