A person was fatally shot by a Chicago police officer early Saturday in Austin on the West Side.

Officers were responding to a call of people breaking into a vehicle in the 5500 block of West Thomas Avenue around 3:45 a.m., according to Chicago police.

The group then got into a dark car and drove off, police said.

Officers came across the car driving in the 800 block of North Waller Avenue and attempted to pull it over, but the driver of the vehicle crashed into two police squad cars, pinning one officer, police said.

The officer then fired his gun, striking one person. The individual was taken to Stroger Hospital and pronounced dead, police said. Their name hasn’t been released.

A second person was placed in custody and taken to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries.
