A significant section of the M6 has been closed following a police response to a welfare incident. The closure affects the motorway between junctions 1 and 2, near Rugby in Warwickshire. Drivers are being urged to seek alternative routes as the situation unfolds.
At 2:42pm today, National Highways reported that the M6 was blocked northbound between the M1 and A14, and closed southbound between junctions 2 (Coventry) and 1 (Rugby) due to the police-led incident.
Warwickshire Police confirmed that there are currently no casualties, although the incident involves one pedestrian. A police spokesperson stated, "Officers are currently in attendance on the M6 near Rugby following a concern for welfare incident. A closure is in place between junctions 1 and 2 on both sides – motorists are advised to please take an alternative route."
As the situation developed, delays were reported in the area, with National Highways traffic officers assisting police. By 3:52pm, traffic was being released, and National Highways West Midlands announced that the northbound traffic had been cleared. They stated, "Traffic has now been RELEASED northbound on the #M6 between the #M1/#A14 and J1 as this incident has now been resolved. The closure on the southbound carriageway is now also in the process of being removed. Thanks for your patience if you've been held up this afternoon."
The incident has since been resolved, and traffic is gradually returning to normal.
