LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — A puppy found abandoned in a trash bag has died despite intensive veterinary care, prompting authorities and animal welfare advocates to seek justice for the dog they named Nova.

The young dog was discovered by a Chesterfield County officer in critical condition, starving, weak and barely breathing. The officer immediately transported the puppy to a veterinary facility for emergency treatment.

"This sweet girl was found discarded like garbage, struggling for every single breath," Lancaster SPCA said in a Facebook post . "It’s disturbing, disgusting and heartbreaking beyond words."

The officer who rescued her gave her the name Nova, which means "new" and symbolizes new beginnings.
