LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Following the devastating murder of 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham from Livingston last February, state officials began the process to give both Audrii and her family justice.
As of September 1, Audrii’s law is now officially in effect, which will close a loophole and strengthen sex offender registration requirements in Texas.
State Representative Trent Ashby authored the bill and said that this was a long time coming.
“I’ve created a lot of important bills during my time in the Texas House, but arguably this may be the most important,” Representative Ashby said.
The 11-year-old from Livingston was murdered by a family friend, Don Steven McDougal, who lived on the property.
Before living on the property, McDougal had been convicted and child grooming and enticing
