Tourists visiting Lisbon are not deterred by the streetcar crash that took place on Wednesday that killed 16 people, including 11 foreigners.
"We wish everyone, the families (of the victims) well during this difficult time," said British tourist James Wilson. "But it’s not spoiled our view of Lisbon at all. Lisbon is a beautiful city and we'll still use the public transport.”
The electric streetcar, also known as a funicular, is harnessed by steel cables and can carry more than 40 people.
Officials declined to comment on whether a faulty brake or a snapped cable may have prompted the descending streetcar to careen into a building where the steep downtown road bends.
The yellow and white streetcar has been part of the city’s identity since the turn of the last century, when the first electric cars entered service in 1901.
