Some Palm Springs residents worry proposed changes in city law could allow taller buildings near their homes, potentially blocking their views of the mountains and allowing people on balconies to gaze into their backyards.

The concerns come as the city is pursuing a once-in-a-generation update to regulations that govern where buildings can be built and for what purposes, known as the zoning code.

Palm Springs' zoning code hasn't been comprehensively changed since 1988. Local officials want to modernize the code to ensure compliance with state law, encourage increased housing density in some areas and make the city more climate resilient.
