New York City Mayor Eric Adams doubled down on his long-shot independent reelection bid on Friday, pushing back against mounting pressure to abandon his campaign and denying reports he is in talks to join the Trump administration.

The decision, which Adams stated was driven by a desire to defeat Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, could complicate efforts by anti-socialist forces to unite behind a single candidate.

“I am in this race and I’m the only one that can beat Mamdani,” Adams declared at a fiery press conference. The mayor also aimed sharp words at his fellow independent candidate and former Democratic governor, Andrew Cuomo, calling him a “snake and a liar.”
