For every birthday, 5-year-old Zaria Miller could count on two things: a flower bouquet with a handwritten note from her “datty” and a special daddy-daughter date where she’d wear a brand-new birthday dress .

This year was supposed to be no different.

But just days after her birthday on Aug. 19, Zaria was tragically pulled into a storm drain after a water main break on Aug. 24. She passed away four days later, on Aug. 28, during the week their daddy-daughter date was supposed to happen.
