HAMMOND — For Mary LeVan, attending Purdue University Northwest's Fitness and Recreation Center has become a sort of tradition.

Since retiring in 1993, the 96-year-old Hammond resident has been attending the fitness center and has participated in the SilverSneakers program — a health and fitness program for adults 65 years and older on eligible Medicare plans — three days a week.

"It's like a structure in my life," she said. "I appreciate that it doesn't seem like exercise; it seems more like playtime."

However, starting next month, LeVan and the approximately 14 other SilverSneakers participants will have to take part in the program elsewhere.
