CASTROVILLE — An important local and regional connector of the Monterey Bay area is undergoing a transformation to make it a safer and more accessible thoroughfare through the unincorporated Monterey County town of Castroville.

Major rehabilitation of Highway 183 continues with construction on Merritt Street in Castroville to enhance multimodal travel, according to Caltrans. The next phase of work will result in daytime sidewalk and curb work.

The improvement project aims to enhance safety, ride quality and accessibility along Merritt Street – Highway 183 – through Castroville from Mile 8.3 to 9.98. Improvements include pavement rehabilitation, bridge repairs, upgraded transit stops, ADA-compliant sidewalks, bicycle lanes and intelligent traffic systems.
