U.S. independent director Jim Jarmusch’s gentle comedy about families and aging, "Father Mother Sister Brother", won the prestigious Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday.

The runner-up Silver Lion award went to “The Voice of Hind Rajab” by Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania. It’s a harrowing true-life drama about the killing of a 5-year-old Palestinian girl during Israel's ongoing invasion of the Gaza Strip.

The highest nod to Jarmusch is considered an upset win over some of the festival’s bigger hits, including “The Voice of Hind Rajab” and Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice,” which left empty-handed.

“All of us here who make films are not motivated by competition,” Jarmusch said. “But I truly appreciate this unexpected honor.”
