For one half, Duke football looked like it could survive its mistakes – largely thanks to its defense.

Despite a muffed punt and a fumble that handed Illinois early chances, the Blue Devils trailed just 14-13 at the half, out-gaining the Fighting Illini 240-132 and holding them to negative rushing yards. Duke ’s defensive front set the tone immediately, forcing Illinois to punt on its first two drives as Vincent Anthony Jr. came up with crucial third-down sacks.
