SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane County Interstate Fair opened its gates amid smoky conditions caused by regional wildfires.

Visitors to the fairgrounds noticed the hazy backdrop wasn't from barbecue smoke but rather from wildfires burning in the region. The smoky conditions prompted concerns for sensitive groups who may want to limit extended outdoor exposure during the weekend.

Erin Gurtel, Director of Spokane Fair and Expo Center, acknowledged the air quality concerns but emphasized the fair's extended run provides flexibility for attendees.

"There's still going to be a lot of opportunity for people that maybe have sensitivities to the smoke to come out another day," Gurtel said.
