MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A man was killed after being hit by a suspected drunk driver in Hilmar late Friday night, Merced CHP announced.

According to the California Highway Patrol, just after 11:20 p.m. they received reports of a pedestrian who was hit by a dark-colored Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Highway 165 near Third Street in Hilmar.

Officers report the 64-year-old man was pronounced deceased by emergency personnel. He has not been identified.

Around 11:40 p.m. a Los Banos CHP sergeant stopped a pickup truck with front-end damage southbound on Highway 165 at Henry Miller Avenue. CHP Merced officers responded and eventually arrested the driver, identified as 40-year-old Angel Ortega of Los Banos.
