Firefighters freed a 30-year-old man Saturday after he fell about 15 feet into a manhole in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles.
The situation was reported at 1:22 p.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of South Boyle Avenue, near the junction of the 10, 5 and 101 freeways, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department's Lyndsey Lantz.

Based on the patient's location in an underground space, authorities upgraded the rescue to a confined space operation, necessitating the employment of LAFD hazardous material specialists for air monitoring and an LAFD Urban Search and Rescue component for the technical hoist rescue, Lantz said.
