CLEMSON — The final score read 27-16, Clemson over Troy.

But the masses at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 6 were challenged to forget the halftime score: 16-3, the Trojans over the Tigers.

Clemson’s 17-10 loss to LSU was disappointing because a highly touted offense led by senior quarterback Cade Klubnik was out of sorts against another SEC opponent.

But the No. 8 Tigers’ first half against Troy was even more astounding. The preseason favorites to win the ACC fell behind 16-0 at home to a Sun Belt squad.

It would have been difficult to script a worse half of football from Clemson, which continued a backslide in the national narrative. They were preseason title contenders , but now the cynics are likely to call the Tigers early-season pretenders.
