The Citadel freshman quarterback Cobey Thompkins made the most of his first career start, rolling up 231 yards of total offense and the defense scored twice as The Citadel rolled past Samford 40-13 in the Southern Conference opener for both schools.
Thompkins, a redshirt freshman, completed 9 of 11 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 76 yards on 13 attempts to lead The Citadel’s offense.
The Citadel (1-1) defense turned in a couple of scoop and scores. Bradlee Jones returned a fumble 59 yards for a TD, while defensive back Sayre Smothers added another 31-yard fumble return for a score in the third quarter.
Samford (0-2) committed five turnovers, including three interceptions.
