Russian forces conducted their most extensive aerial attack on Ukraine since the onset of the war early Sunday, deploying over 800 drones and missiles. This assault resulted in at least two fatalities, including an infant, and left numerous buildings damaged in Kyiv, marking a significant escalation in hostilities.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the attack involved 810 drones, four ballistic missiles, and nine cruise missiles. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 747 drones and four missiles, but 54 drones and nine missiles successfully struck various targets across the country. This operation surpassed a previous large-scale attack in July, which had been the largest until now.

In Kyiv, the Cabinet of Ministers building, which houses the offices of the Ukrainian government, was hit for the first time during the conflict. The attack caused significant damage to the roof and upper floors of the building. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed the damage, stating, "For the first time, the government building was damaged by an enemy attack. Rescuers are extinguishing the fire. We will restore the buildings, but lost lives cannot be returned."

The assault also impacted residential areas, with a nine-story apartment building in the Sviatoshynskyi district suffering severe damage. Reports indicate that the strikes resulted in the deaths of a mother and her two-month-old child, with more than a dozen others injured. Emergency services responded to multiple fires caused by the drone strikes, and images from the scene showed extensive destruction.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, calling it "vile" and a deliberate act of aggression. He emphasized the need for the international community to take action against Russia, stating, "The world can make the Kremlin’s criminals stop killing, all we need is political will."

The attack comes amid ongoing discussions about potential peacekeeping efforts in Ukraine, with several Western nations pledging support. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected the presence of Western troops in Ukraine, labeling them as "legitimate targets."

As the situation develops, Ukrainian officials are focusing on enhancing air defense capabilities and preparing for further military responses. The conflict, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, has resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction across Ukraine.
