Purdue found its winning identity, but must grow into it as competition stiffens

WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue football must first find its identity before it can establish a winning identity, and that project lurched forward Saturday night.

A week earlier, the Boilermakers won their season opener despite a lackluster rushing attack. They committed to establishing the line of scrimmage during a physical week of practice.

Then they beat Southern Illinois 34-17 on Saturday night by stiffening on defense and riding their workhorse more than ever before.
