Carlo Acutis - a 15 year-old dubbed a "digital disciple" - has been declared as the first millennial saint, in a ceremony presided over by Pope Leo today (September 7).

Leo canonised Carlo Acutis, who died in 2006, during an open-air Mass in St Peter’s Square. It was attended by tens of thousands of people, many of them millennials and couples with young children.

The teen became a prominent face among many young Catholics for being a relatable, modern-day role model, who used technology to spread the faith, which even earned him the nickname "God's influencer".

The newly proclaimed saint was born in London in 1991 but grew up in Milan where he soon became a devout Catholic after receiving his First Communion at the age of seven, the Mirror reports .
