Millions of 3G and 4G compatible phones will be contacted in just under an hour as part of the UK Government's emergency alert system test.

The scale of the test may leave some wondering if their mobile number was shared for the Government to send them the alert, but that isn't how they will receive the message.

As the system functions on all 4G and 5G networks in the UK, a mobile number is not required.

An iPhone or Android device doesn't need to be connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi to receive alerts.

In fact, they can be blocked on mobile devices, while 5G phones may not be compatible with the new system, and any phones older than 3G will not be too out of date for the alert.
