NEWBURGH — It took more than 14 hours for crews from an array of fire departments and emergency response agencies to extinguish a raging chemical fire at an industrial facility in Newburgh that forced thousands of area residents to shelter in place Saturday.
That's according to the Ohio Township Fire Department, which early Sunday released additional information about the fire and the authorities' response as uncertainty about the kinds of hazardous materials ignited by the fire and carried by its smoke plume roil nearby communities.
"At this time, based on assessments and analysis, there is no identified threat or hazard to the public," the department stated in a news release.
The release confirmed the 10,000-square-foot blaze that first erupted around 2:40 p.m. at a PBTT Corp. manufac
