Ihave noticed on airplane flights nowadays that it’s very quiet and there are very few conversations among the passengers. Almost everyone is engaged with a computer, iPad, or iPhone. (It should be noted that you have to turn off your devices before the plane takes off.) It’s ironic that you can only get wi-fi on a plane if you pay for it.
I also notice that in restaurants, friends and families are not conversing but looking at their screens. It is a great irony of our age that we have opportunities for instant communication with those present around us but we are really not engaged.
Did the art of conversation die instantly as we entered the age of texting? I remember that my students would try to text each other during class. This was not allowed and we would take their phones.
