OLD SAYBROOK, CT (WFSB) - Officials announced the passing of the longest serving Old Saybrook police officer on Sunday.

The police department said Sergeant Thomas Newton died at age 88.

He was an Old Saybrook police officer for 55 years.

The fire department said Newton served them for nine years before joining the police force in 1969.

Newton joined as a part-time patrolman and stayed until Chief Spera retired his badge in 2024.

In 2005, Newton stepped back from patrolman duties and worked as a Community Service Officer supporting the department at special events.

Channel 3 had the pleasure of speaking to Sgt. Newton last year at a ceremony where he was honored for his service.

Authorities have not yet announced his funeral arrangements.
