WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A bicyclist has died after being struck by a vehicle in Watauga County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

On September 6, around 8:50 p.m., troopers responded to a crash on US 421 near Vanderpool Road in Vilas.

Officials say a 2003 Ford F-250 was traveling south on US 421 and failed to reduce its speed, colliding with an electric bicycle that was also traveling south.

The bicycle rider, Joseph Clyde Butler, 39, of Vilas, was ejected and critically injured in the crash. He was transported to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Butler died on Sunday.

Butler was not wearing a helmet during the crash.
