RCMP divers have recovered the body of a young man who drowned in Upper Thetis Lake last Thursday.

According to West Shore RCMP spokesperson Const. Nancy Saggar, the 19-year-old’s body was brought to the surface at around 4 p.m. Sunday by divers with the RCMP underwater recovery team and View Royal Fire Department.

“Divers worked under challenging conditions due to dense underwater foliage and the search was ongoing for several days,” Sagger said.

According to the Victoria Times Colonist , the man was a student from California and was having a friendly race with family members to a small island in the lake when he ran out of energy and began struggling.

A passerby attempted to dive and find the man but failed after several attempts.
