LETHBRIDGE — RCMP in eastern Newfoundland are asking some residents of the community of Lethbridge to immediately evacuate their homes because of a fire near a lumberyard off Route 233.

The Mounties in nearby Clarenville say the fire broke out Sunday near Sexton Lumber.

As a result, police and ground search-and-rescue volunteers are asking residents of the Bayview neighbourhood to leave their homes.

Police say Route 233 is impassible in both directions and motorists are being asked to avoid the area.

The local fire department and the provincial Forestry Department have been called in.

Lethbridge is north of Clarenville and about 200 kilometres northwest of St. John’s.
