Paterson officials have increased the police presence at the city’s annual Dominican Parade Sunday after authorities were notified of potential gang activity.

The 36th annual parade, which is expected to draw thousands of people, will have more than 200 officers patrolling from all levels of law enforcement, from the FBI to local police departments, Paterson Mayor Andrew Sayegh told NJ Advance Media.

Despite the increased police presence, Sayegh said people are still encouraged to watch and participate in the city’s biggest annual event.

“We don’t want to dissuade anybody from coming,” Sayegh said.

According to Sayegh, multiple agencies are investigating the threat of gang presence in a “coordinated effort.”
