Shares in the almond giant Select Harvest (ASX code SHV) dropped six per cent to a nine-month low last week, following news that Varroa mite had been detected in bees at one of its South Australian orchards.

Australia was the only major honey producer in the world to be Varroa-free until 2022, when it avoided strict biosecurity controls and sneaked into NSW via the port of Newcastle. SA had been free of the pest until now. However, the mites were found last week at Select Harvest's Jubilee Orchard near Loxton, in SA's Riverland region.
