A new report from a scientific research arm of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers looks at the chronic, growing problem of a kind of blue-green algae accumulating on shorelines of Lake St. Clair.

The study recommends a large-scale mechanical removal of the muck, and the use of algicides and other measures to keep it from growing back.

Its scientific name is Microseira wollei , or M. wollei . But for those on the western shores of Lake St. Clair plagued by it, it's known as The Muck.
