What is meant by the “dementia stare”?

The dementia stare is a common symptom of dementia characterized by a blank, unfocused gaze, often directed into space or at a fixed point, with a lack of engagement with the surroundings.

Known as glassy or gazed eyes, the vacant stare can be a result of cognitive impairment, sensory overload, or difficulty processing visual information. Additionally, it can be a way for affected individuals with dementia to try and communicate needs or express emotions when verbal communication is impaired.

Common causes of staring behavior include:

Confusion and trouble interpreting their environment.

Too much activity, noise or crowds overwhelming an individual with dementia.

A nonverbal means of communication, particularly in cases when verbal communication
