Waterspouts spun across the eastern Great Lakes on Sunday, Sept. 7, and more could be on the way, according to forecasters.
The Great Lakes saw at least 27 confirmed, fair-weather waterspouts/funnels — and more may have spawned beyond view — on Sunday, including on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, according to reports by the International Centre for Waterspout Research, a nonprofit that tracks the phenomena.
Forecasters with the Centre say there's a slight chance waterspout activity could continue on the Great Lakes into Monday, Sept. 8.
Waterspouts tend to form when the air is cool and moist, and the water is near its warmest. The phenomena tend to form on the Great Lakes from August to October, the National Weather Service said.
