NEW YORK — Austin Wells has proved plenty of doubters wrong with his defense over these last two seasons, developing into one of the best receivers behind the plate in the big leagues.

In the Yankees ’ big win over the Blue Jays on Sunday, however, it was Wells’ arm that stole the show, helping to preserve a one-run lead with the game on the line.
